Understanding the Basics
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are tooth-shaped dental prostheses designed to fit around and cover the front surfaces of your incisors and canines (front teeth). Typically, they are made of porcelain in order to match the color of your enamel perfectly, ensuring a natural appearance.
Veneers can be used to correct almost any cosmetic issue. They commonly fill gaps, cover severe stains, and disguise crooked, misshapen, or chipped teeth. They’re very durable, easily lasting 15+ years, and require very little special care. We recommend you see Dr. Shaggy for a consultation every six months to have your teeth and veneers examined and cleaned.
The Veneers Process
What Can I Expect?
The veneer placement process typically takes three appointments over a span of several weeks. First, you’ll see Dr. Shaggy for an initial consultation. If she approves you for veneers, she will begin creating your veneer treatment plan.
Consultation: You’ll come in for a consultation with Dr. Shahriela Ganjoor for an oral exam and assessment. She can tell you if you have oral health problems that need to be addressed before getting veneers or if your teeth are too severely chipped or crooked for veneers to properly cover and protect them.
Preparation: Once you’ve decided that veneers are the right cosmetic treatment for you, we’ll have to prepare your teeth by filing down .5 mm of enamel. This is the same thickness as the veneers themselves and ensures the veneers will fit over your teeth without sticking out or hitting other teeth. Impressions will be taken of your filed teeth and sent to a dental lab that will create your veneers.
Bonding: It will take a few weeks for your veneers to be finished so you will wear a set of temporary veneers to protect your filed down teeth. Once we receive the finished veneers, we’ll check how they fit over your teeth. Before we bond the veneers to your teeth with dental cement, we clean and etch the teeth to assist with the adhesive. The adhesive is cured with UV light for instant hardening.
Aftercare: Dr. Shahriela Ganjoor will explain how to care for your veneers and when you can expect to replace them. You should return to the dentist in 6 months for a cleaning and check on their condition.

Common issues that veneers can fix
Veneers cover up dental imperfections like discoloration and damaged teeth by bonding porcelain shells over top of the front-facing surface of the teeth. The existing problems will still be there underneath the veneers.
While veneers don’t fix the structural issues of the teeth, they will hide these aesthetic problems so that your teeth look much whiter, straighter, and more uniform when you smile. The porcelain materials that veneers are made from appear very natural so no one will be able to tell that your teeth have artificial coverings. Some common issues that veneers can cover include:
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Gaps
- Minor chips and cracks
- Minor cases of overcrowding/crooked teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too long or too short
- Worn down enamel
- Oversized teeth
- Teeth that are too small
However, keep in mind that severe cases of chipped teeth or severe orthodontic problems may not make you a good candidate for veneers. A tooth that is severely chipped or has an exposed root may be a better candidate for a dental crown. If your teeth are severely misaligned or you have an improper bite, you should undergo orthodontic treatment before getting veneers.
The Right Option for You
Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?
If you have multiple cosmetic issues with your smile, but your mouth is free of any major damage or disease, you’re likely a good candidate for veneers. Find out now by scheduling an appointment at Modern Bite Dentistry.
Veneers vs. Lumineers
What’s the Difference?
Veneers and Lumineers are identical in function, with one exception. While veneers are about 0.5mm in thickness, Lumineers are made of a thin, proprietary ceramic material that’s only about 0.2mm thick.
This means that Lumineers can often be placed without removing any natural enamel. For this reason, Lumineers are often called “no-prep” or “minimal-prep” veneers. This also means the treatment can be reversed, which is not true of traditional veneers.
