Understanding What Conditions Qualify
What Is a Dental Emergency?
There are a lot of different types of dental emergencies. The most obvious are injuries caused by trauma, such as a slip and fall, a car accident, or a hard hit in a contact sport. Here are a few examples of common dental emergencies:
- Knocked-out teeth
- Broken or cracked teeth
- Lacerations (cuts) to the lips, gums, and cheeks
- A prolonged, severe toothache, which could indicate an infected tooth
- Pulled-out or missing dental work like fillings and crowns
- Unexplained gum bleeding, which could indicate gum disease
As a rule, we recommend that you come see Dr. Shaggy if you are experiencing any kind of oral pain, discomfort, or bleeding. When it comes to your oral health, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Getting the Help You Need
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
First, we recommend contacting MODERN BITE DENTISTRY as soon as you start to notice a problem. Some injuries must be treated within 1-2 hours in order to save your tooth, and all dental emergencies can be resolved more effectively when they’re treated right away. Call us at (214) 214-7790, and come into our office as soon as you can.
If you have lost a tooth, do your best to recover it. Grab it by the top (the crown) rather than the bottom (the root) in order to avoid touching the delicate nerves. Rinse it off and put it back in its socket, or into a container of cold milk. Similarly, if you’ve lost a piece of dental work, retrieve it and put it in a plastic bag.
If you can’t get to us right away, you can take several steps to reduce pain and discomfort before your appointment. You can take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or naproxen to help with pain and inflammation. Use clean gauze or cotton balls to absorb any blood. Applying an ice pack externally can also help with pain and swelling.
However, remember that these are all temporary fixes. Do not waste time trying to resolve the problem on your own, especially if you have a serious injury like a knocked-out or broken tooth. Come to see Dr. Shaggy as soon as you can.
