Understanding The Basics

What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped dental prostheses that effectively function as false teeth. They are built to cover up all of your remaining enamel after your tooth has been trimmed, replacing the natural tooth all the way down to your gum line.

In the past, dental crowns were mostly made of metal like gold or steel. But while these metals, gold in particular, are very durable, they do not look natural. Today, crowns are mostly made out of porcelain. Porcelain can be matched to the color of your teeth, and is similar in translucence to natural enamel, so it looks extremely realistic.

Most lab-made dental crowns are built using a porcelain-fused-to-metal design, which improves durability. In this design, a metal base is used to create the crown, and a layer of tooth-like porcelain is permanently fused to the outside. This two-layer design helps increase the overall strength and durability of the crown. Crowns can also be built entirely out of porcelain, in some cases.

The Dental Crowns Process

What Can I Expect?

After you’ve been approved for treatment, getting a crown will take two appointments over a period of several weeks. At your first appointment, your tooth must be prepared for the crown by trimming it and reducing its overall size.

To begin this process, Dr. Shaggy will clean and numb the treatment area for your comfort. Then, she will use a dental drill to gently remove some of your enamel and trim the tooth into the required shape. Once that’s done, she will take impressions and images of your tooth. This information will go to our partner dental lab, where your permanent crown will be made.

Then, our cosmetic dentist will attach a temporary resin crown to your trimmed tooth to protect it. You’ll wear this for a few weeks, until your permanent crown arrives at MODERN BITE DENTISTRY.

Once your permanent crown comes to our office, you’ll schedule your final appointment, which is totally non-invasive and takes only a few minutes. At this appointment, Dr. Shaggy will begin by removing your temporary crown and cleaning your tooth to prepare for permanent crown placement. Then, she will check the fit of the porcelain crown. If it looks perfect, she will use powerful dental cement to bond it to your tooth permanently.

Caring For Your Crowns

What You Should Know

One of the best things about dental crowns is that they don’t require you to take any special care precautions. Just brush and floss normally, come and see the team at MODERN BITE DENTISTRY for six-month cleanings and oral exams, and take other steps to keep your mouth healthy! Eating a healthy diet, reducing your intake of sugary and alcoholic beverages, and quitting smoking or tobacco use is a great way to start. That’s it!
